Development Squad
Brocton 2 Barwell 2
Hewitt 6
Bloor 65
The development team came back twice against opposition who had only lost twice this season in the league, and potentially could have taken the lead at various moments within the match.
Barwell started the brighter of the sides and within 2 minutes they had taken the lead. A mistake at the back allowed in the bright Robinson to deftly lob Wood in the Brocton goal from 25 yards out. Reeling from the early set back, a new partnership in the midfield of Smith and Addison worked well to push forward whilst attempting to restrict the Barwell midfield. With 5 minutes, Brocton equalised through a disputed goal. Fleming launched one his trademark throws into the box, which was met by Hewitt’s goal bound header. The ball struck the underside of the cross bar and the floor, and the referee signalled for the goal, despite Barwell protests. Brocton continued to come forward with Johns in his best game this season, facing a one-on-one but just dragged his shot wide. Barnard had the next opportunity from the edge of the box, but again dragged the shot wide with the only the keeper to beat. Barwell refused to be overpowered and took the lead again via a well headed corner from close range. Wood came to the rescue moments later as a Barwell forwarded latched onto a ball to force and one-on-one but the Brocton keeper was equal to it. Fleming and Bilson tried to stop Barwell coming forward but again Wood saved well from an acrobatic effort from the Barwell no9.
26th March 2011The second half started well for both sides and continued to provide chances for both sides. Johns provided excellent service from the left hand side and on a couple of occasions the cross just required a Brocton head in the right place at the right time. Wood continued to impress at the back with improved performances from the back line in the second half. Brocton equalised through the goal of the season so far for the development team. Bloor picked the ball up in his own half and drove forward past a couple in the Barwell midfield. He played a one-two with Smith in the middle, then proceeding to drive past the Barwell defence and finish the move with a nonchalant flick on the outside of his left foot past the advancing keeper. The goal galvanised Barwell and they poured forward with a series of corners and freekicks designed to pressure Brocton into submission, yet Wood stood firm and produced a series of excellent catches and saves to keep the scores level. On 90 minutes Brocton had the chance to snatch it with Johns crossing, Bowers crossing back in again, but just behind Hewitt and Ellis. A well deserved draw in a very entertaining end to this seasons home games for the development team.

Brocton 1 Gresley FC 0
Hewett 18
Brocton bounced back from a midweek defeat to Chasetown with a much improved performance against Gresley at home.
With the weather threatening to ruin any football, Brocton fielded a changed 3-5-2 formation with new captain Hewitt using his experience to lead the line. The opening exchanges set the tone for the game with both teams battling well in the midfield but failing to convert this into chances. However, Brocton had their secret weapon in store, in the form of the FlemBomb, Sam Fleming’s Delap impersonation. Fleming let fly half way through the first half, allowing Hewett to meet it at the near post to head past the keeper for 1-0. As the half progressed, Fleming continued to be a thorn in Gresley’s side with Bloor providing ammunition via set pieces.
The second half started brightly, but with a flooded midfield from both sides, the key word was possession and territory rather than goal chances. Hewitt continued to battle up front with Bogle providing the energy behind him and Ellis providing an aerial threat. The Gresley attack was well shepherded with Fleming and Forrester working well allowing Johnson to take most of the afternoon off. Wynn came on and probably had the chance of the half with a one-on-one late in the game, but the Gresley keeper was equal to it. An improved performance by the team and a well deserved 3 points.

Brocton Res. 1 Tipton Town Res. 3
Barnard ‘31
Despite taking the lead against their Black Country neighbours, Brocton’s recent good form came to an end against Tipton Town as the visitors Ryan Mullins scored a hat trick.
With reserve team debutant Mick Fox leading the experienced front line with Richie Hewitt, chances were never going to be far away. Showing the confidence gathered from the previous wins, Brocton had early opportunities through Fox and Ellis both testing the keeper but to no avail. Fox was in the thick of it, first with a one-on-one and then combining with Hewitt only to see a rising shot drift over the bar. With the pressure mounting a goal was coming, and it duly arrived from the unlikely but industrious source of Josh Barnard. Great interplay between Bloor and Fox lead to Barnard who despatched the ball into the bottom right hand corner in a text book shot across the keeper. If there were any illusions this would be an easy afternoon for Brocton, these were shattered as Tipton took the wake up call and started to test Fleming. Barely 15 minutes later, Mullins scored the first of his hat trick as Hancock challenged for the ball but missed and Mullins side footed past Fleming. Just before the half, Tipton had turned the tables on Brocton with confusion in communication allowing Mullins to tap into an unguarded net.
After a frenetic first half, the second half was much tighter between the sides, with both probing for a way forward but unable to find the touch which would open the defences. Ellis and Barnard continued to push forward, ably supported by Whieldon and Smith in the middle, but Hewitt and Fox could not find a way through. Fox then sprung the off side trap to lift the ball over the advancing keeper, but was adjudged to have moved too quickly, a shock to all at the club including Fox himself, and the goal was disallowed. Pace was injected with Mason and Johns coming on, but it was a Brocton old boy, Tom Tonks who came closest for Tipton by missing a free header 5 yards from goal with only Fleming to beat. With both sides tiring, it was left to Mullins to have the final word by powering past 3 players and finishing past Fleming for his hat trick on 90 minutes. A disappointing end to an entertaining game for Brocton, but some big positives to take forward into the away game this Saturday (5th Feb) at Boldmere St Michael’s.

Brocton 0 Oadby Town Res. 4
Brocton’s reserve side played like a side that’d had a good New Year’s Eve, as Oadby ran out comfortable winners in this Reserve League clash.
After a good run of form before the break, Brocton looked to start brightly, but Oadby it the post within 2 minutes of the start to make it a rude awakening for 2011. Undeterred, skipper for the day Mulherin laid a ball through to the lively Mason who couldn’t latch onto it, even with his pace. Mason charged through on goal again minutes later, but again the Oadby keeper won the race to the ball. With a new 3-5-2 formation in use, Brocton tried to exploit the wings with Bloor and Mulherin, which almost paid dividends when Whieldon hit a trademark long shot, which just slipped wide. At this stage, Brocton were containing Oadby well, but a lapse of concentration in the box lead to the first goal. A cross came into the box which the defence failed to deal with, but fell at the feet of Makoni who smashed past Johnson for 1-0. Oadby doubled their lead in a fortunate manner. Williams drove into the box and shot, but the ball deflected and fell at theA feet of Blow, who brushed the ball past Johnson into the opposite corner. Brocton were reeling and gathered themselves to try and threaten the Oadby back line. With Ellis and Mason spearheading the attack and Smith at the point of the central midfield, pressure was duly applied. However, it was left to skipper Mulherin to take a free kick which rattled the bar from 25 yards, but no one could follow up.
The second half started as the first finished with Brocton pushing on looking for a way to get back into the game. Despite the efforts, Oadby added a well taken 3rd goal with Bryan bursting past Bloor on his inside and providing the cross for Blow to add his second of the game from close range. It was the hammer blow for the home side who continued to try and force their way back into the game with new energy from the returning Clarke and the pace of Forrester, but despite attacking, Brocton could not find a way through. On 87 minutes, Oadby scored the final goal and Blow completed his hat-trick from just inside the box to end Brocton’s wake up call back into league competition. Next up is Heather St Johns away on the 15th January in the MCRL.

Boldmere St Michael’s 3 Brocton 2
K Smith 46
Mason 80
Brocton bowed out of the Challenge Bowl with a spirited performance against Boldmere St Michael’s on a very cold night at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground.
With a raft of players called up from the under 18’s it was certainly a stern test for some of the team, but buoyed with recent performances, Brocton set out for the win. With Johns and Wynn combining well up front supported from Smith and Melvin in the middle, Johns ran through on goal only to be flattened by the Boldmere keeper. Boldmere then poured forward but their striker couldn’t keep the ball down. On the counter, Smith released Johns in the middle for a one-on-one with the keeper. Johns dragged the ball past the keeper and shot but the keeper got a hand to it. Boldmere then punished the Badgers immediately as the left winger finished from a tight angle for 1-0. Unperturbed by the goal, Brocton kept attacking with Forrester turning provider for Smith, who couldn’t hit the target. Both sides were not afraid of leaving space at the back and away side created the move of the match between Johns, Wynn and Bloor but with no end product. Shortly before half time and a well earned seat in the warm, Boldmere doubled their lead with the left winger cutting into the box and hitting a well placed shot past Wood.
The second half continued as the first half ended with both sides on the attack. With their first attack of the half, Brocton broke into the box and a shot from a crowd was saved by keeper, but Smith reacted quickest and tucked away his first goal for the club. Boldmere were not going to let Brocton back into the game easily and Wood pulled off an excellent one-on-one save only to see the rebound fall at the strikers feet who finished for 3-1. Undeserving of the score line, Brocton kept on going with Wynn hitting the woodwork and debutant Hindle completing a mazy run through the middle of the park with a shot well saved. Wood continued to thwart the Boldmere forwards with a string of fine saves, providing a springboard for Brocton to push on. Mulherin, on a sub, hit a long pass to Johns who then flicked the ball into Mason’s path. Mason ran 30 yards with the ball before finishing with aplomb under the keepers arm for 3-2. By this point, the acting Manager Paul Smith could have brought the kitchen sink on, as Boldmere looked tired and Brocton looked for an equaliser. Bloor had a late opportunity to snatch a point but couldn’t force the ball over the line. A good performance from the team, not rewarded with points but the form will serve them against Barwell at home on Saturday.

Midland Combination Challenge Bowl Group B
Brocton Reserves 1 Chasetown Reserves 1
Wynn 80
Brocton managed to take their first ever points from their local rivals in the third encounter between the sides this season so far.
Brocton started brightly taken confidence from the recent improvement in performances against Chasetown. Bloor provided good penetration on the left hand side of midfield, given the Chasetown defence plenty to think about, but couldn’t provide an incisive finish. With skipper for the night Harrison holding well in midfield this allowed Bloor and Hall to join Wynn in providing an attacking dimension for Brocton. However, Chasetown started to impose themselves on the game and took the lead on 16 minutes. A deflected shot from Smith looped over the stranded Whitehouse only to see a Chasetown forward simply tap in from close range. Brocton then held their nerve as another Chasetown attack saw Aiton lob the ball over Whitehouse, but Hancock covered exceptionally well to clear the ball. A shuffle of the Brocton pack was required following an injury to Hancock on the half hour which disturbed Brocton’s plan. Smith had another opportunity to score for Chasetown but blazed his ball over the bar from close range, and then another chance, but this time Hewett cleared from the line to keep the score 0-1 for halftime.
The second half was a more balanced affair with Brocton growing in confidence as Chasetown’s frustrations grew in the front of goal, with Hewett again having to clear off the line. Despite a quieter performance than last week, Hall had his now customary long shot from midfield, but unlike Tipton Town, this time his effort struck the bar with venom. With a breeze blowing in the second half and temperatures dipping, Brocton had the ascendancy and it was no surprise current in form striker Wynn drew the Badgers level. Bloor again raced to the by line and whipped a perfect cross over for Wynn to powerfully head into the bottom corner with a text book header. Before the end of the match, Brocton again hit the bar but a winner wasn’t to be and Brocton came away with a deserved draw.

Challenge Bowl Group B
Brocton Res.1 Tipton Town Res.1
Hall 90
Brocton battled back to earn a creditable draw against one of the best sides in the Reserve division. Tipton’s reserves came into this game from a club morale boosting FA Cup tie at Carlisle United and the players responded by stepping up the tempo against a Brocton side with Hewitt leading the line with his experience and Hume adding pace and width. Tipton went closest to opening the scoring in the opening period as they crashed a shot against the bar, beating debutant Wood in the Brocton goal. Hewitt then had a golden chance to score, but with the goal at his mercy, he couldn’t get enough power on the shot and saw the keeper claw it back from the line. Brocton kept pressing forward but it was Wood who was called into action with an excellent save from a quick Tipton break. Tipton had the bit between their teeth and before the half was out, they hit the bar again from 35 yards with Wood beaten, but the rebound was cleared well.
With Wylde starting the second half, Brocton looked more attacking and started to take the game to their opponents. An excellent corner found Wynn whose flick found Hume in space, only got Hume to miss just wide. With the midfield pressing forward and a forced change at centre back with Hancock slipping into Bilson’s position, Brocton looked capable of scoring. The move of the match came moments later with Wynn completing a Cryuff turn to beat his man and a pin point cross found Hume in space, but he couldn’t direct his header goal ward. Tipton then took the lead from the spot with Evans handed a red card for a challenge within the box. With the Tipton striker running away from goal, Evans slid in and it was the encouragement the referee and Tipton needed. With the game heading for a loss, in the dying seconds, Hall picked the ball up mid way through the opposition half and drove towards goal. With his right foot he hit a stunning strike into the top corner for a deserved draw which felt like a win.

Staffs Challenge Cup 2nd Round
Chasetown Res. 3 Brocton Res. 1
Johns 7
In a determined and combative performance, Brocton exited the Challenge Cup in the 2nd round despite taking the lead against their more experienced league rivals, Chasetown Reserves.
Chasetown made the very early running with a deep ball finding Aiton in the box, but despite being unmarked, he could not find the target. Brocton could have been forgiven for thinking a repeat of the recent 7 – 0 was on cards, but it was Brocton who took the lead. An excellent ball from Smith found Wynn, who ran at the Chasetown back line before finding Johns on the left wing. The pacey winger tussled with the right back and then shot, which deflected over the keeper into the net. Brocton then had a chance to extend their lead as a deep cross found Lycett in the Chasetown box, but couldn’t direct the header goalwards. Chasetown reacted by powering through the middle and using experience to their advantage. A searching cross found Chasetown’s left winger, who with quick feet found an extra yard in the box but couldn’t find the target. This spurred on the home side to attack and the Brocton defence came under increasing pressure, and it was a soft shot which lead to the equaliser. Brocton failed to pick up the run in the box and Chasetown finished low past the outstretched hand of Johnson for 1-1.
Shortly after the break, the home side took the lead after Chasetown broke on the left hand side of the box but Brocton were unable to stop the shot which squirmed past Johnson for 2-1. Within 10 minutes, Chasetown increased their lead with a carbon copy build up of the second goal, with the same outcome to lead 3-1. At this stage, Brocton could have been forgiven for caving in to the pressure and leaking more goals, but the visitors refused and started to put the pressure back on the Chasetown defence. Evans provided the depth from the left flank with Bloor adding pace and drive, whilst Wynn and Ellis added purpose. Skipper Bilson had an opportunity to reduce the deficit from a cross but as the ball rebounded to him, he couldn’t adjust his body to put it past the Chasetown keeper. Chasetown kept the pressure up but the Brocton back line held firm to restore a little of the pride lost in the previous 7-0 loss earlier in the season.

Brocton Res. 3 Highgate Res 2
Forrester 16
Mulherin (pen) 55
Wynn 75
Brocton came back from 1-0 down to win this tight encounter with a superb final goal from Wynn, to go 3rd in the Challenge Bowl Group B.
Brocton opened well with Forrester providing the penetration on the left and a returning Jack Hall adding pace on the right. However, it was Highgate who opened the scoring as the nimble no7 for Highgate received the ball whilst the defence were napping and then slid the ball past the outstretched hand of Johnson in the Brocton goal. Highgate’s high hopes were dashed after a long Hall throw reached Wynn in the Highgate box who headed against the bar, but Forrester pounced on the rebound and headed home from close range. With both sides battling for the points, both had chances to extend their lead, but Brocton were restricted to long range efforts, whilst Highgate blasted over from 6 yards.
With the second half barely started, Brocton took the lead with a penalty after Ellis was brought down in the box. Despite a long pause whilst the referee made his wishes known, Mulherin stepped up to the plate to hit the target and continue his 100% record from the spot this season. Brocton were now in command, but a small drop in concentration in the back allowed Highgate back in the game. As the ball was cleared from an attack, Brocton were not alive enough in the box for the second phase play, leaving Highgate’s striker able to draw the visitors level from close range. In seasons gone past, this may have been enough to see the young side go into their shells, but the opposite was true and Brocton attacked. Highgate also threw themselves forward, but an excellent run and shot from Wynn sealed the game for Brocton. Picking up the ball from 20 yards outside the box, Wynn powered past three players and then hit a left foot shot across the keeper in the far corner for 3-2. Despite Highgate going close in the dying moments, the experience of Winstanley in midfield and composure of Sadler on the ball saw Brocton home for another win this competition.

Quorn Res. 8 Brocton Res 2
Taylor, Bilson
This was The reserves second league match and the game was a tight affair for the first quarter of an hour with both teams probing. On 16 minutes the Brocton defence was breached as they attempted to play offside, Quorn slotting the 1 on 1. Two mins later a long ball out was returned immediately and another rolled in ball was run onto by the impressive Quorn striker to make it two. Brocton repeated the mistake a third time to go three down 1 min later. Mike Pierce made two superb saves low down before Two further goals were conceded down the middle. A 35 min free kick to Brocton saw Sam Lycett head across goal and Taylor Ellis volley home from 6yds. Unfortunately after 5 mins of Brocton pressure a fifth incisive ball split the defence and they went 5 . 1 down at the break.
The second half saw Brocton out of the blocks well and some good interplay saw a couple of crosses and half chances go begging. The impressive Pierce just failed to hold onto a long range effort on the hour before another rolled in pass was converted on 55 mins. The defence was out paced to make the deficit 8 .1. One min later Ellis raced onto a through ball of his own and was tackled as he was pulling the trigger. On 70 mins a deep free kick from Aiden Forrester was headed home by Captain Tom Bilson. Mike pierce then made 4 saves 1 on 1 as Brocton were pushing high in search of goals. This was an impressive MOM performance. Three further half chances fell to Brocton before the final whistle. Brocton 2 Boldmere St Michaels 2

Brocton fought back from a goal down only to see Boldmere equalise in this entertaining match.
Following an excellent performance in midweek to a Midland Football Alliance side, Brocton started the game in exactly the same manner as the Alvechurch game by conceding a goal early. The defence were caught square at the back which the Boldmere left midfielder took full advantage of. His ball into the box was behind the centre of defence and almost behind his striker, but the Boldmere No 7 turned in from close range. This galvanised the team into action and for the remainder of the first half it was Brocton on top. Johns had the first opportunity as Bloor hit a delightlful back post cross which Johns volleyed over, then Lycett went close with a header from a corner. More was to come as Johns and Bloor were again in the mix as first Johns hit a long shot wide and Blooor forced the keeper into a diving save. The goal was coming, and again it echoed Wednesday nights game. Wynn powered through into the box, only to brought down by the Boldmere keeper who was lucky to stay on the pitch. An unlikely penalty taker in Mulherin, stepped up and no mistake from 12 yards with a top quality penalty just inside the left hand post. There was no let up in the Brocton play with Wynn almost hitting the goal of the season with a long rising drive the Boldmere keeper tipped onto the crossbar.
Within 5 minutes of the restart, Brocton had turned the game around. Bloor was adjudged to have been brought down in the box although nowhere near as cast iron as the first decision. With another penalty, Mulherin stepped up again, and echoing the decision, his strike was nowhere near as decisive at the first, but as they say, they all count and Brocton were 2-1 up. Boldmere stepped up the pace to attack the Brocton rearguard and equalised with a soft goal. A floating ball was lofted into the box and with a degree of confusion, the diminutive No 7 simply flicked the ball over the onrushing Fleming for 2-2. With their tails up, Boldmere continued to attack, but with poor finishing they were struggling to worry the Brocton goal. Then, with 5 minutes remaining, Fleming was called into action in quick succession as Boldmere found their shooting boots. In one passage of play Fleming complete 3 excellent reactive lunging saves to deny Boldmere a late winner. Alex Mason had a late opportunity to win it , but a draw saw Brocton rise to third in the group.

Brocton 1 Heather St Johns 0
Brocton finally kicked off their league campaign with a hard fought 1-0 win over Heather St Johns Reserves. However, they had to finish the game with 10 men following a controversial sending off for the returning Aaron Gough.
Brocton started the brighter of the two sides with Swarbrick forcing the Heather keeper into a full stretch save but Ellis failed to capitalise on the loose ball. The strike partnership of Ellis and Wynn caused issues for the heather defence, but Heather fought back putting Wilcock’s goal under pressure but couldn’t find a way past the Brocton stopper. Clarke and then Bilson saw two good efforts go to waste as neither troubled the keeper, but it was left to Swarbrick again to force the keeper into a fine save following a rasping shot from the left hand side. As Brocton kept finding their way through the Heather back line, Wynn suddenly found himself him space, then bore down on the keeper before coolly slotting the ball under him for 1-0 just before the break.
With a even start to the second half and both sides looking to gain an advantage in the midfield, the game threatened to peter out with the exception of a well placed Melvin freekick which had the Heather keeper scrambling across his goal. However, late on in the second half, the game unravelled into a fast paces last 15 minutes. A pass back was given against Brocton as Hancock slid in with the Heather striker to meet the ball but was adjudged to get the last touch. The resultant free kick ricocheted from the wall to a Heather player who lashed the ball towards to goal. Aaron Gough, on a sub jumped in the way of the shot but the ball struck his upper arm. The ref was quick to send off Gough, despite the lack of intent, and Brocton were down to ten and faced a penalty, excellently saved by Wilcock to his left. Heather then tried to push the advantage for the last ten minutes, but a combination of poor finishing and excellent defending meant they left Silkmore Lane empty handed. Next game for the Reserves is at home to Boldmere St Michael’s on Saturday 16th October, 3pm KO.

Hobson ’42

After a nervy start, Brocton took the game to their Mid Comb Division 2 opponents to come back from 1 – 0 and win 2-1.
The young side found themselves 1 down within 10 minutes after confusion between Lycett and Clarke allowed Cadbury’s striker to latch on to through ball and slide under the advancing Brocton keeper. To the team’s credit they regained composure and attacked their opponents with Hobson and Melvin providing penetration on both wings and Wynne running selflessly up front to try and mke the difference. The breakthrough came just before half time when a free kick from the left hand side of the box was clipped over the wall and past the keeper into the top corner by Hobson. No less than the team deserved heading into the break.
Brocton continued where they left off in the first half after the break, pushing forward on the flanks with Evans and powering through the middle with Brown. Hobson darted down the left wing and then cut the ball into Wynne who shot at the Cadbury keeper. The keeper let the ball squirm under his body and towards the goalline but Melvin reacted first and forced the ball over the line from close range for 2-1. Brocton were by no means home and dry as Cadbury came close on a couple of occassions but Brocton’s keeper did well to get behind the shots and keep Cadbury out. The last 5 minutes saw substitutes Taylor and Mason also get into good positions but with shots wide, they couldn’t add to the score.

Brocton Res 3 Barwell Res 1
Brocton ended the season on a high by beating a league championship chasing Barwell side 3-1 with an under 20’s squad, highlighting the strength-in-depth at football club.
Brocton had showed promise in previous games, but failed to convert these into a wins. However, the players shone under the floodlights whilst adding bite and patience to their undoubted talent. The opening exchanges were tight with Brocton’s 4-5-1 paying dividends by employing Warren and Whieldon in a combatative midfield. Hall lead the charge from the front but it was Barwell who had the best of the long shots, but they couldn’t force the returning Whitehouse into a difficult save. Then Gough hit a trademark freekick from the edge of the Barwell box, only to see if fly a whisker wide of the target. Barwell were denied a first half penalty as a shot hit a Brocton hand for all to hear around the ground, but the penalty was denied. Towards the end of the half, Warren, Evans and the improving Nixon all attacked the Barwell defence, with Evans coming closest to breaking the deadlock on a bursting run into the box, but his shot was agonising wide of the post after beating the keeper.
Brocton started the second half as they ended the first as Whieldon came close to opening the scoring, but he couldn’t latch onto a Hall cross. Barwell then used their experience to edge Brocton out of the game, and came close to scoring after a free header in the box went wide. Evans had a second opportunity to score, as another blistering run from Hall lead to a cross from the byline, bypassed the Barwell defence to allow Evans to slide in at the far post, but on his right foot he couldn’t steer the ball home. Barwell had their wake up call and duly took the lead. A corner came in from the right and the Barwell central defender headed the ball into the ground with the following bounce beating Whitehouse for 1-0. In games gone past, the young Brocton side may well have failed to come back, but not in this game. Whieldon drew Brocton level as he met a Hall cross only for the keeper to save. As the keeper pushed the ball away, Whieldon seized on the opportunity and back-heeled it past the keeper for 1-1. Brocton could sense Barwell’s frustrations after seeing a lead slip, and they went for the winner. Warren had an opportunity but shot wide, then Hall grabbed his first of a well deserved and impressive brace. Latching onto a through ball, Hall unleashed an early shot from 25 yards which the keeper couldn’t handle and the ball slid under him for 2-1. Far from settling for the 2-1, Brocton poured forward with a solid backline of Fleming and Billson providing the licence for the midfield to push on. With 5 minutes left on the clock, Warren put Hall through on the edge of the box, who hit a well placed shot past the keepers outstretched hand and into the bottom corner for 3-1. The best performance and result of the year kept for the last game, but it bodes well for this young squad in next years competition.

Brocton Res 2 Quorn Res 4
Brocton ran the league leaders close in this encounter and lead for a long period until defensive errors and a low sun put pay to Brocton’s resolve.
Brocton came out the blocks the quicker of the two sides with the experience of Hewitt and Miller up front linking well with the youth players around them. Selsby was the first to flirt with the Quorn goal but the shot was well saved. The visitors came back at the home side, but Johnson in the Brocton goal was equal to the pressure, first saving well from a long shot, then pushing another Quorn shot around his left hand post. Then Miller was set free through the middle but he couldn’t force the Quorn keeper beyond a routine save into his mid-riff. The league leaders then tried to intimidate the young Brocton defence but with the all-action Fleming and Hancock in the centre of defence, Quorn were restricted to long shots which failed to trouble Johnson.
From a goalless first half, the second half saw 6 goals with Brocton opening the scoring. Hewitt latched onto a through ball on the edge of the box and saw the Quorn keeper off his line. Despite scrambling backwards, the Quorn keeper could only help the ball into net rather than save it. Within 10 mins Quorn were level following a free kick conceded by the otherwise impressive Whieldon. The ball floated into the box for White to header from inside the of the box past the stranded Johnson. Hewitt caused problems with the Quorn defence which instigated a groin high kick into Hewitt. Whilst Hewitt was receiving treatment, a quick free kick found Miller in the box who lashed the shot into the net for 2-1. With 10 minutes to go, Brocton were looking good value for a result, when Quorn scored their first of three goals in quick succession. Firstly, Johnson looked to be infringed within the box, but dropped a free kick in front Taylor who placed the ball past Johnson for 2-2. One minute later, a free kick was given, just as the sky cleared for the first time. Standing with the sun to their backs, Quorn shot from distance and Johnson, marginally unsited, could only help the ball into the net. Finally, Quorn hit the hammer blow on 90 minutes as Johnson failed to handle a long shot for 4-2. Richardson struck a long shot in an attempt to pull a goal back for Brocton, but it wasn’t to be. A much improved performance from Brocton Reserves, who now face two games in four days with Boldmere St Michaels visiting Silkmore Lane on Easter Saturday, followed by Barwell at home on the 8th April.

Brocton Reserves 3 Highgate United Reserves 4
For the second time this season, Brocton failed to hold a lead against Highgate and lost narrowly in the final phase of the game.
In a frenetic opening, both sides were on the offensive from the start. Whieldon found himself in the box to turn and shoot, but just failed to hit the target. Highgate then took the lead as their left flank pushed past Forrester and crossed into the box. Brocton failed to clear their lines and Highgate capitalised from 6 yards out. Within 5 minutes, Brocton pulled the score back to level terms after Sean Gough was needlessly pulled down in the box. The referee showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Selsby make no mistake from 12 yards out. Brocton were in the ascendancy and continued to add pressure through good work from Mulherin, Gough and Johns before Gough added a second. Through on goal, Gough faced a double challenge from the centre back and right back, as the central defender cleared the ball, it ricocheted off Gough and over the stranded keeper for 2-1. A fortunate but well deserved lead was increased following a disputed penalty. Gough again burst through the Highgate defence but the left back left a trailing leg which forced Gough off balance. The assistant referee waved for the infringement and Selsby sold the keeper in the wrong direction for penalty number 2.
The second half saw Highgate push on and Brocton failed to deal with the forward threat. On 55 minutes Highgate reduced the deficit following a free kick well struck past the Brocton wall and into the bottom corner. Despite being under pressure, Brocton tried to play their way out of defence and Barnard pressed through the middle of the pitch but Gough just couldn’t find the shot. Fleming turned into an all action sliding defender but even he couldn’t clear his lines to allow Highgate to equalise from close range in box. Nation then threaded an excellent ball through to Hall who just dragged his shot wide, for Brocton’s best chance of the half. As the game wore on, Highgate kept pressing and eventually this told. A awful collision saw Cheadle and Aaron Gough collide on the edge of the box following a lofted ball from Highgate. As both players lay prone on the pitch, the ball rolled into an unguarded net. An undeserved loss for the reserves, who go onto face Barwell at home next Saturday.

Midland Combination Reserve League 13th March 2010
Walsall Wood Res. 3 Brocton Res. 0
Brocton Reserves failed to capitalise on the previous week’s excellent result with defensive errors at critical moments proving pivotal to Walsall’s win.
Starting brightly Steve Whieldon latched on Taylor Ellis’ through ball within the first 2 minutes, but Whieldon failed to convert the chance, which could have changed the game early on. Sean and Aaron Gough both had chances from a tight angle and free kick respectively, but both shots were matched by the keepers positioning. The pressure continued with Jamie Evans swinging a ball from a corner right under the bar for the keeper to palm away, followed by Whieldon and Gough combining well for Gough to shoot just wide. Walsall Wood then took a surprising lead following a comedy of errors from the Brocton defence. A Walsall throw wasn’t cleared by the defence, then the resulting cross was not cleared sufficiently and fell to Walsall’s Whitehead whose scuffed shot found the inside of Whiting’s post. Left stranded by the shot, Whiting’s major work of the half was to pick the ball out of the net.
Brocton started the second half brightly with Kent stinging the keeper’s hands with a free kick and then Gough again having a sight of goal but failing to test the keeper. However, Brocton failed to clear a Walsall free kick from the right, and the resulting bouncing ball fell kindly to Walsall’s Clarke 6 yards out and unmarked to strike past Whiting for 2 nil. In response, Brocton made a change with debutant Nation playing on the right hand side of midfield. Whilst adding bite to the midfield, Nation could do nothing about the third goal as Walsall started to relax and press home their advantage. A cross came in from Taylor-Boyle and struck a Walsall player to bobble past Whiting, hitting the inside of the post again. It was a harsh lesson for Brocton to learn, but to their credit they continued to press up front with Whieldon driving forward and Gough attempting to test the keeper. Walsall pressed through a good long shot from sub Dennant and then Cooper but they could not add to the scoreline as Brocton tightened the backline. Next game for Brocton will be Highgate United Reserves at home on the 20th March 3pm KO.

Brocton Res. 1 Quorn Res. 4
Brocton started this game at a good pace and in only the second minute Jack Hall was brought down in the penalty area by the Quorn goalkeeper, but the referee did not, give a foul. Throughout the first 20 mins Brocton were matching a strong Quorn who lead the division. On 22 min a deep cross to the far post saw them squeeze in a header to go one up. Three mins later the mercurial Jamie Evans was dancing inside and outside players and got brought down in the penalty area and he coolly converted. Half chances went begging for Quorn but with a trialists keeper in goal the defence was solid. Then on the stroke of half time an unmarked Quorn player on the edge of the box stroked in a goal to take the lead. Brocton still had chance to equalise and Kent skipped round a plyer in the box and his toe poke went agonisingly close.
The second half continued as the first half. Steve Wheildon was influential in the middle of the park and most threats were coming down the left with Aaron Gough punching balls into Hall, Evans and Sean Gough up front. Quorn restricted these threats to half chances and showed their class by counter attacking on 64 mins and a strong run through midfield past several players going to ground saw them awarded a penalty for once such tackle, to take a 3 – 1 lead. Sam Fleming and Tom Billson in centre defence were then subject to a full assault by the now confident Quorn midfield and strikers dropping off. One such attack saw them roll the defence and slot home a simple goal. To Brocton’s credit they did not give up and gave a high energy display in particular with the quick Gough, Hall combination up front.

Boldmere St Michael’s Res. 3 Brocton Res. 0
Despite starting the brighter of the two sides, Brocton’s second string suffered an away defeat to Boldmere whose first team play in Midland Football Alliance, a league above Brocton’s first team.
Brocton started with spring in their step, with good interplay between Hall and Miller helping to find Sean Gough making piercing runs into the heart of the Boldmere defence. A new centre back pairing of Billson and Fleming started to find their feet, but not in time for Boldmere to opening the scoring with Thompson scoring the first of his brace passing Mark Fleming in goal with an arrowed shot into the bottom left hand corner. Brocton tried to galvanise themselves and push forward with Aaron Gough and Evans linking on the left hand wing and Whieldon in his first start combating well in the midfield. Boldmere then missed from close range, serving as a warning to the Brocton defence.
At one nil down, there was always a chance Brocton could find a way past the Boldmere back line, especially with Wollatt in the middle providing the guile to Whieldon’s industry. Miller then had the best chance of the game as Hall provided a deep cross to Evans who headered back to Miller. Miller then volleyed a shot low to the keepers left but he was equal to it. Immediately after this, Boldmere and Thompson scored the second goal of the game after finding himself free in the box and placing the ball past Fleming for two nil. Two minutes after the re-start Brocton were denied a penalty despite the defender clearly pushing Gough in the back, only for Referee Crook to rob Brocton of a chance from 12 yards. Despite the midfield battling well, Boldmere scored a late third to flatter the scoreline after substitute Clews mis hit his shot only to see it ricochet from the inside of the far post for 3 – 0. This simply illustrates Brocton’s luck at the moment, and can go some way to explaining why decent performances are not turning into points.

BARWELL RES 6 BROCTON RES 1
A report may follow, but the reserves yesterday away at Barwell. With Barwell’s first team flying high, their reserves had a smattering of first team talent and our lads couldn’t match Barwell’s experience. Jack Hall scored a consolation goal at the end, but the damage was done as Barwell entered the break 4 nil up. A better performance saw the team lose the second half 2-1 following a hotly disputed penalty for Barwell.

MATCH REPORT – BANBURY AWAY
Reserve Division
Banbury United Reserves 1 Brocton Reserves 1
Brocton’s longest away game in the league ended in stalemate but where left to contemplate what could have been as host of chances to win the match were not converted.
Banbury started the brighter of the two sides, but it was Brocton who created the first chance with Bennett crossing to Hall whose shot was easily smothered by the keeper. Brocton continued to press in the midfield with debutant Beeson and Barnard providing a good platform for Bennett and Gough to push forward. Hall and Selsby provided width and it was a cross from Selsby which led to the opening goal. The cross was not picked up by the Banbury defence but found Bennett who, despite a clattering challenge from the keeper, kept his feet to smash the ball home from close range for 1 nil. Brocton continued to press home their advantage with Selsby finding Gough in a tightly packed box. The snap shot from Gough looked a certain goal, but the Banbury keeper reacted instinctively and forced the ball over.
After the break, Banbury’s midfield turned on the pressure on Brocton and created a chance on goal, but the striker hit high over the box. After this early wake up call, Brocton started to flood forward with good interlink play between the mdifield and forwards. Gough had three similar opportunities in a 10 minute spell, which should have put the game past Banbury. All the chances saw Gough receive the ball inside the Banbury half, then run at the central defensive partnership before shooting just wide or over. Despite creating the majority of the chances, Brocton could not make this tell and Banbury capitalised by equalising Gough was set free from an excellent ball by Aaron Gough but just touched the ball too far past the keeper to finish from a difficult angle. Despite an excellent performance after a 6 week break, the result was not a fair reflection of Brocton’s dominance. Next up for the reserves is a trip to Barwell.

Brocton Reserves 0 Chasetown Reserves 2
In a game of missed chances, a strong Brocton side failed to convert their opportunities whilst the visitors made no mistake in front of the Brocton goal.
Brocton started brightly with Tonks providing penetration to the right wing and Fife trying to unlock the Chasetown defence from the centre of midfield. Within 10 mins Brocton were denied a penalty as Tonks was tackled from behind in the box, but the referee waved away the protests. Chasetown started to impose themselves on the game and forced a succession of corners, but the Brocton defence were equal to the pressure. On 25 minutes, Chasetown forced another corner on the right hand side. The corner failed to clear the first man, but the Brocton clearance found a Chasetown player on the wing. A deep cross followed, only to be met a Chasetown central defender who looped a header past a stretching Chorley for 1 – 0. Brocton used the goal as a springboard and lept into action with Hulme and Fox spearheading the attack. First Hulme set Tonks free in the middle who took time to shoot, but the defence held firm. Then Fox chipped a glorious ball into the far post after good work on the wing, but Hulme just couldn’t steer the ball goal bound. Brocton continued to attack, but the pressure could not be converted into goals.
After halftime, Brocton changed tactics to a stable 4-4-2 which resulted in a midfield battle neither team wanted to loose. Winstanley and Fife fought to try and contain Chasetown’s skipper Hawkins, who pulled the strings for the young Chasetown side. On 65, It was Hawkins who forced Chorley into an excellent save to his left, but the visiting right winger was first to react and from a tight angle, forced the ball under Chorley for 2 – 0. Brocton now pressed forward to try and take something from game, with Hathaway and Reeves covering the defence well to allow Brocton to push forward. Tonks continued to press and Scott added another dimension to Brocton’s play, but for all the possession and pressure, the final shot was never enough test the Chasetown keeper fully. To many of the team this was their first taste of Reserve team football, a hopefully they now have a new found appreciation of just how tough this league can be.

DEVELOPMENT SQUAD TRIAL ANNOUNCED
The club have announced they are looking to add to their Development Squad over the Christmas period and are holding a Mid-Season trials match at Silkmore Lane.
“Our first team are currently riding high in the Midland Combination Premier Division challenging for promotion to the Midland Football Alliance and the support provided by our development squad has been instrumental in Brocton’s improved performance this season, with several of our young reserves successfully stepping up into the first team squad.” Said Reserve ream boss Mick Hathaway “Our results are showing that a strong reserve and youth set up is the platform that the club has needed and that it is definitely the way forward. We aim to recruit the best of local talent aged 16 to 21 to supplement our existing Reserve and Youth teams. As players are promoted this obviously creates spaces at Reserve and Youth team level which we shall be trying to fill with recruits from this trial” added Mr Hathaway.
Youth team manager Richard Ellis has seen several players promoted into Men’s Saturday football and said “this is a vindication of the policy set out by fellow coach Dan Richardson and myself over a period of 4 seasons, that is to promote a player when he is technically capable and not be bound by traditional ‘time served’ practises. When you see 3 of your players ‘blooded’ at first team level and playing regular reserve team football it is deeply satisfying as a coach.
The trial will take place on Sunday 27th December at 11am at Brocton’s excellent Silkmore Lane facility.
Young footballers who are interested in joining an FA Charter Standard Adult Club and would like more information please phone Mick Hathaway on 07976 545047 or Dan Richardson on 07816492056.
