Staffordshire County Minor Sunday Youth League

Highfields Associates Division 1

This was an entertaining game, played in excellent spirit by two sides intent on attacking. The pitch had been rained on before kick off, which made for a slick surface and helped to make this a game for attacking play.

Despite many canny approaches, good defending and sound goal keeping threatened to keep the teams level with no score as the half time whistle beckoned. Outstanding at the heart of Brocton’s defence was the unflappable David Heath, who read the flow of the game impeccably and was always on hand to snuff out any threat.

It was a high, deep corner kick by Lee Melville which broke the deadlock. It swung  in and looked to be going out over the bar when the wind held it up and despite a valiant attempt by the visiting keeper, he was unable to stop the ball going in off the under side of the bar.

Sandbach were stung into action in the second period and Brocton were reduced to ten     players, so the initial quarter of the second half saw Sandbach on top, but again unable quite to turn their approach work into goal attempts.

In fact it was Brocton who increased their lead, when the industrious Kirwan Fars broke through the Sandbach back line and hit a superb rising shot wide of a stunned keeper. His strike partner Alex Mason had also covered most of the pitch in an attempt both to get in on goal and to break up any possession at the back that the visitors had and so it was fitting that he too added to Brocton’s tally. A darting run into the box was found with a tempting low stab diagonally across his path and Mason coolly slipped the ball beneath the                         advancing keeper with his left foot.

Sandbach had deserved something for their part in the action and were soon back in the hunt with a slick move all down their left flank, which culminated in a neat shot at the near post by Jordan Pakeman.

The final ten minutes could easily have brought them right back into the match as, lifted by their goal, they piled on the pressure. Three times in as many minutes Mark Fleming saved at full stretch. The first was low at his right hand post and the other two were high to his right. He did as much as his more attacking colleagues to ensure that this was Brocton’s day.

Staffordshire County Minor Sunday Youth League

Longton Trophy Premier Division

The young Badgers were out of the blocks fast in this Premier league encounter.  Some entertaining football was played and several chances went begging.  Longton started to compete around the half hour mark and had some ½ chances before on 40 mins the influential Jamie Evans danced past the Longton left and crossed for Captain Jack Warren to rifle in from 6yds.

After half time Brocton upped the pace again and were attacking at will.  However, they were caught out on a counter attack with a long ball to be pegged back to 1 – 1.   A neat move 5 mins later with Warren advancing on the back four, saw Warren slip Josh Saunders through and fire home from a tight angle on the left.  A few mins later with Brocton attempting a killer third, Longton again launched a long ball to win a corner.  Brocton conceded a sloppy goal from the corner with no challenge coming in.  The Badgers Youth team hit back a few mins later with Warren and Saunders playing in Jack Hall who slipped the keeper.  Hall had another attempt  when one on one and a fine save from the keeper denied him.  A quick counter attack on 80 mins saw MOM Warren spread the ball wide to Christian Darby who shot from a wide angle and the keeper parried the ball out, and Taylor Ellis followed up for a tap in.  The next game is against Audley Youth – Away Sun 1st Nov KO 2pm

Brocton lost this second leg of the Oadby Town double header, but were marginally edged out by a more experienced side, despite having the advantage at half time.

Within the first minute, Brocton should have avenged the previous week’s reverse at Oadby, when Leason found himself in the box with just the keeper to beat, but the keeper spread himself well to deny Leason his first goal. Brocton continued to play good football and applied the pressure further when Bennett hit a long testing shot, just wide. Oadby’s set pieces were a threat and within 5 minutes, Oadby had two free headers from corners but couldn’t capitalise. Aaron Gough then applied himself purposefully through the Oadby midfield and hit a stinging shot at the Oadby keeper from 35 yards out. Despite recent results, Brocton were looking to score in every attack through Leason or from the midfield via Tonks and Sean Gough, but it was Bennett’s turn next to fire header a goal ward but just over. Despite Brocton having the lion’s share of the first half, the visitors rode their luck and the half ended 0 – 0.

Whatever the Oadby manager said at half time, it certainly had an impact as his charges started brightly in the second half. Firstly a long shot from the substitute cannoned wide, but then a hopeful ball found an Oadby striker in the box who beat Evans in the air for a soft header past Lote. Oadby’s brightest pushed on as they hit the crossbar and forced Lote into some excellent saves. Brocton found Lady Luck was not paying attention when Sean Gough was unceremoniously pulled down in the box, only for the ref to wave away all protests. As if to reinforce Brocton’s poor fortune at the moment, an Oadby substitute struck from 35 yards off balance and hit the postage stamp. A shot even Van Der Sar would have struggle to save. Brocton rallied themselves for a late charge with Bennett in the thick of things but it was all to no avail. A hard result on the young Brocton side, and they will reflect on missed chances and what should have been. Brocton face a long away trip to top of the table Quorn next Saturday, 3pm ko.

Team

Lote, Griffiths, A Gough, Billson, Hathway, Selsby, Barnard, Tonks, S Gough, Leason, Bennett.

Les James Challenge Cup

Brocton go through 3 – 2 on penalties.

The only true winner in this game was the weather. Neither side could cope with a blustery wind which made accurate passing a rarity and judging headers difficult to say the least. As the ball spent most of it’s time in the air, this made possession hard to come by.

Up front for Brocton Richard Miller and Lee Scott worked extremely hard both in attack and defending deep when the ball was lost. They linked well minutes into the game and only good defending from the home side forced a corner as Miller tried to get a cross in from Scott’s neat flick on.

Richard Reeve’s long throws were as dangerous a part of Brocton’s attacking game as   anything and Miller produced a shot with his left foot on the turn after one such throw caused consternation in the home penalty area, but it went well over the bar.

Nearing half time Richard Jones headed clear at the back and Lee Scott collected, spun and was through the back line, being taken down as he got clear. Richard Reeves was on the end of the free kick, but could get no power on his shot.

Coton Green had breaks from the back as Brocton sent more bodies forward and almost at the stroke of half time a weak back pass from Matt Skinner to his keeper had Mike Shelper darting forward to turn the ball for a corner, which was cleared.

The second half had the home side with the wind at their backs and they produced more pressure on the Brocton goal with long kicks out from the back, but twice when in good positions in front of goal, the eventual shot was high and wide.

An injury meant that Charlie Woollatt had to give way to Richard Hewitt in the second half and soon Richard Miller and Ben Harrison came off for Dave Berks and Andy Chandler pushing Hewitt up front and leaving Berks and Chandler in midfield. Almost immediately Berks combined with Sam Bell on the right to give Bell the chance to get in one of his tempting low crosses. Lee Scott got in a shot, but it ricocheted wide.

Then it was Chandler and Berks who exchanged short passes on their way to the edge of Coton Green’s area, but the move was smothered before any serious threat came about.

Both sides looked heavy legged as the game went into extra time and the most frequent stoppages were for cramped legs. In the first of those periods, Hewitt produced an over head kick into the keeper’s grateful arms and then made a neat diagonal run across the keeper to get on to a Bell cross after a Chandler pass, but the keeper was down at his feet and a foul was awarded.

Coton Green had the final fifteen minutes with the wind advantage and pressed hard as Brocton had to fight to keep them at arms length, but in the end the stalemate was a just outcome.

Shelper made a spectacular low full length save to his right to keep out the first penalty and put Brocton in the driving seat and they kept that advantage until the weary Richard Hewitt hit his effort wide of the post. Shelper immediately made an equally good save to his left to get back that advantage and in the end the Badgers did not need their final                     penalty as the keeper beat away the last attempt.

 JW Hunt Cup

Just ten minutes into this game, with Tipton already showing pace and flair, Brocton were clearly going to have to be on their mettle to stay with the Midland Alliance side. A ball to Mick Fox on the left hand touch line was worked into Tom Tonks, just inside Tipton’s area, but seemingly well marked. The ball slipped past his nearest defender though and Tonks needed no second invitation to slide the ball coolly into the net beneath keeper Matt Osbourne.

Tipton broke quickly in response and within the minute had grazed the angle of bar and post with a shot from fully 35 yards. Twice in succession then Brocton attempted to remain cool under pressure and almost over did it. First Dean Crowley was caught right on his own bye line, but recovered well to get the ball away and then Richard Hewitt was robbed in midfield and the speed of Tipton’s break gave them a 4 on 4 situation. A neat step over a cross field pass left Chris Rabone time and space to shoot, but his effort went over the bar.

It was an overlap on the left flank which brought the home side their reward as a low hard cross was missed by everyone in the Brocton box and Liam Bood was at hand on the far post to rifle home.

Brocton then made a good break of their own, but a ball slipped forward by Steve  Bennett was cut out and yet another Tipton fast break was on this time Dean Crowley cut out the vital last ball in and set up Bennett on the right. He beat one tackle and road another before his cross was cut for a corner. Tom Tonk’s corner was beaten away for a throw, but his throw caused more problem as Crowley challenged for it and defender Rick Huckfield could only direct it into his own net.

That was on the half hour and less than a minute later another Tonks throw was allowed to bounce deep inside the box and Sam Bell had the simplest of tasks to give Brocton a two goal cushion.

Tipton continued to threaten, particularly down the left hand flank and on 42 minutes a great cross from that route beat everyone including two raiding Tipton forwards to go out for a goal kick.

The open nature of the game suggested more goals but,  whilst the second half  produced plenty of action, there were few serious goal threats. The best came from Steve Bennett after a jinking run and fierce shot which Osbourne did well to beat away.

The home side stepped up the pressure as the game drew to a close and Richard Jones did well to head out when the Tipton right winger looked set to pounce on a deep cross, but this was Brocton’s night.

Brocton’s chance to take top spot in the Midland Combination Premier this week was foiled by a re-emerging Cadbury side who have made a marked improvement over their last few games.

Cadbury started the most lively and took the game to Brocton from the start, and were   testing the resilience of the home side, in fact Cadbury’s Cordell Jones was yellow carded for a two footed tackle on Richard Jones who used his skill to avoid serious injury. From this stoppage and several others in the early stages Brocton started to get their own game together albeit their cautious  approach left Scott and Miller short of support at crucial times. Brocton varied the play and it was Fife who caused panic in the Cadbury defence with a well struck shot just deflected over the cross bar but could have easily have finished in the net. Adam Ainge had the ball in the net for Cadbury but was well offside. Cadbury however were defending the Brocton attacks in numbers and were always prepared to break out with purpose, and it was from one of Cadbury’s forward runs that Chris Jones centred the ball for his oncoming forwards but the ball travelled  over keeper Mike Shelper and in off the post just 6 minutes before the break.

Brocton did not have much opportunity to make amends in the first half but it was Gary Fife who set the Badgers on their way early after the restart releasing Lee Scott who slotted the ball past the advancing keeper.

Brocton went close on 65 minutes as Fife lobbed the keeper and with the ball goal bound, Cadbury’s Greg Ellard cleared off the line and gave them an amazing escape.

Cadbury took the lead for the second time with Ainge following up a save by Shelper from Cordell Jones which he could only parry away but into the path of the advancing forward.

Brocton were now throwing everything at Cadbury and changed their formation to get more fire power in the forward line with Richard Hewitt coming on for defender Andy Chandler.

The game was now hotting up to a grand finale and it was the industrious Fife who saved the day for Brocton with an 84th minute drive into the corner of the Cadbury net.

The game was now on a knife edge  with both teams going for that all important goal and both teams had chances to take all the spoils before referee Glover bought this entertaining game to an end.

Brocton must reflect on a missed opportunity with their league position but Cadbury provided stiff opposition and a draw was a fair result.

Brocton came into this game with their tails up following the previous week’s win, however, a goal into injury time from Highgate stopped Brocton completing a memorable come back.

With changes from the previous game, but with goalscorer Jack Hall retaining his place, Brocton made a lively start to the game, but Highgate were determined to put their stamp on the early exchanges. Battling a couple of chances created by Highgate, Brocton almost took the lead through a Sean Gough looping header from 12 yards, but it just cleared the bar. With the young Badgers working on the counter, good interplay from the midfield found Bennett, who powered into space and unleashed a thunderbolt which the Highgate keeper parried well. Highgate kept the pressure up with the left winger marauding into the box, but found Gilhespy equal to the task. With a patched defence, Brocton were playing well although Highgate were still pushing forward. However, it was Brocton again who should have broken the deadlock. Firstly, Bennett flicked onto but it was just out of the reach of Gough, then Hall was set free in the box, but the ball bobbled before Hall could get it under control. Before the stroke of halftime, Highgate took the lead somewhat fortuitously when the Highgate central midfielder slipped on the edge of the box, but saw his shot drift past Gilhespy for 1 – 0.

Highgate doubled their lead almost immediately after the re-start. Brocton failed to clear their lines and the Highgate striker tussled with Hathaway but managed to just get a toe in and lift the ball over the advancing Gilhespy. This galvanised Brocton into action and within 20 minutes they had pulled the game back to 2-2. Jack Hall continued his scoring run after Gough crossed from the left wing and Hall stretched to score from close range. Within 5 minutes, Bennett opened the defence with a ball to Gough who calmly slotted past the keeper. Brocton then had chances to take the lead with Bennett and Brown having clear chances to score, but could not convert. With the game heading for a deserved draw, lady luck did not shine on the Brocton defence. Highgate’s skipper found space on the edge of the box and hit a rasping drive past the out stretched hand of Gilhespy for 3-2 and the win, a very harsh result on a decent second half performance from the Reserves. Next weekend, Brocton travel to Oadby Town Reserves.

Team

Gilhespy, A Gough, Evans (sub Fleming) , Kent (sub Billson) , Hathaway, S Gough, C Selsby (sub Mills), Brown, Barnard, Hall, Bennett.

Thank goodness that football is not played on paper, because if so this game should have been a walk over, but Pershore Town played their full part in an entertaining and high quality match, played in excellent spirit.

Understandably Brocton began full of confidence and only exceptional goal keeping play from Melvin Watson in Pershore’s net kept them at bay in a vibrant first 20 minutes. Mike Shelper’s long kick from hand was flicked on by Sam Bell first for Richard Miller to beat his marker and fire a low left foot shot just wide. Then twice in succession the otherwise excellent Ben Smith found himself cut out of the action by perfect passes inside his line for Sam Bell to glide into the box and put across tempting low crosses. The first of these Gary Fife hit across  Watson only to see him tip it round the post at full length and the second Fife hit on the full and over the bar.

Rob Winstanley set up the next chance from midfield, giving Bell the chance to score himself, but his shot, arrowing for the inside of the far post, once again brought the best from Watson as he turned it round at full stretch. The resulting corner brought a similar save, but the keeper suffered from his effort and moments later Richard Reeves got ahead of him and headed in a pinpoint Fife corner to put the Badgers ahead. That was just before the half hour and Brocton were soon on the attack again as a quick free kick put Fife free in the box, but once again a fine save kept him out.

The respite was short lived though as Richard Jones took a pass from Richard Reeves and quickly sent it on to the willing Scott. Scott found Richard Miller and this time his left foot shot, hit before the keeper could set himself, squirmed in, but that advantage was only held to half time because of a last ditch tackle from Andy Chandler as Pershore threatened to drive through the heart of Brocton’s defence.

The lesson was not learned though, as Pershore took advantage of some casual work in Brocton’s midfield to mount a swift attack of their own, in which Nathan Jones raced ahead on the right and struck a fine shot beyond Shelper.

Pershore then had a period of fifteen minutes or so when, buoyed by their goal, they were at least the equal of Brocton and that period brought the best from the Brocton defence, but the Brocton midfield in particular settled once more and the fresh legs and mind of Richard Hewitt, on for Miller, put him first to react to a delicate forward pass into the box from Fife and coolly lift it over the advancing keeper.

Reward for a fine display of forward play came for Lee Scott as a Richard Reeves throw caused havoc at the heart of the Pershore defence and Scott was on hand to poke the ball home. He was then replaced by Mick Fox and although there were no more goals, Fox and his forward partner Hewitt not only created more chances but also had the experience to keep the play very much in the Pershore half of the pitch.

Staffordshire Challenge Cup First Round

Brocton Reserves ran out deserved winners on their Staffs Challenge Cup debut, but the result should have been much more convincing than 2 – 1 suggests.

With Brocton’s top scorer cup tied and a few influential players not available, it was a chance for the under 18’s side to stake their claim for places. Brocton started the stronger of the two sides, but facing the strong wind, it was difficult to make headway with long shots as Leason was finding. Early in the half,  Jack Hall starting his first game, received the ball on the edge of the 6 yard box following good work from Leason, and slotted under the Hanley keeper for 1 nil. This was the only mistake the Hanley keeper was to make in the first half, after he pulled off a string of fine saves. First, Selsby went close following a cross from Brown only to be denied by a finger tip save. Then Hathaway had a header from a corner cleared from the line. However, it was Hanley who scored on the counter attack. A free kick was given on the edge of the Brocton box, which the wall deflected but didn’t follow up. The Hanley midfielder struck a powerful shot through a crowd to leave Whitehouse unable to prevent the equaliser.

The second half was a damp affair, with the bounce deceiving most everyone on the pitch. With the Brocton defence holding firm under the towering presence of Hathaway, it was up to the pace of Sean Gough and Zac Leason to break the Hanley resolve. With Evans and Griffiths making the most of both wings and providing the supply lines, Gough and Leason were getting closer. It was good interplay between the forwards which lead to the winner, with Leason feeding Gough who powered into the space between the centre backs and slid the ball under the advancing keeper for 2-1. Brocton had multiple chances in the last 20 mins to seal the game, but in the end 2-1 saw the Badgers through to Round 2 and a home tie with Kidsgrove Athletic Reserves on the 7th November.

Team: Whitehouse, Griffiths, Evans (Sub A Gough), Clarke, Hathaway, Barnard, Selsby, Brown, Mills (sub Hobson), Leason, Hall (sub S Gough).

A nail biting finish was no more than this pulsating game deserved as each time Brocton scored, Knowle struck back immediately.

A bright opening form the home side, with a strong wind marginally in their favour, saw Mat Skinner strike the bar with a powerful header as early as the 5th minute after a Lee Scott flicked header from a Richard Reeves throw. Skinner’s follow up header skimmed the top of the bar and flew to safety.

Skinner very nearly went one better when he met a Gary Fife free kick at the far post and turned the ball across an advancing keeper only to see it drift past the far post.

Sam Bell was harshly adjudged to have hand balled an attempted cross which he did everything in his power to avoid, but the dangerous resulting free kick, was smuggled away and Brocton broke quickly. Richard Miller raced on to the ball and popped it into Gary Fife’s path. Fife’s cross beat the far post and the onrushing Skinner.

Miller almost converted the very next opportunity with a diving header at the left hand post, which keeper Shaun Edwards did well to parry. The loose ball was gathered by the alert keeper before Miller could recover from his full length dive.

An injury to captain Matt Skinner meant a reshuffle at the heart of Brocton’s defence with Andy Chandler moving to left back, Rob Winstanley to centre back and Charlie Woollatt coming on in midfield.

It was a Sam Bell tackle and forward move from right back which set up Brocton’s first as he skipped past one tackle near the centre line before releasing a tempting pass to Lee Scott. Scott slipped the ball into Gary Fife’s path and he powered a fine shot wide of the keeper. That was on the stroke of normal time, but in injury time Knowle struck back with a goal mouth melee finished off by Mykey Pryce.

It took another twelve minutes in the second half for Brocton to get back that lead when this time it was Dean Crowley who finished off a messy goal mouth melee. But once again the resilient Knowle struck back inside a minute when a high ball bounced outside Brocton’s box and whilst it was half cleared, Karl King hit a perfect volley to beat Mike Shelper in Brocton’s goal.

Mick Fox came on to replace the hard working Richard Miller and was soon holding the ball and slipping it into the path of Lee Scott on the edge of Knowle’s penalty area. Scott’s fierce low drive beat Edwards to give Brocton the lead yet again.

Knowle threw everything at the home side for the remaining minutes but Brocton this time held on for a hard fought win, taking them into fourth spot in a fascinating league.
